Saving iPhone Battery Life

On the eve of the new iPhone firmware upgrade (2.1), I still think it is a good idea to share my thoughts on conserving iPhone battery life.

Sure, if you talk a lot, you are probably out of luck.  You could also follow Guy Kawasaki’s Art of iPhone Battery Life, but it’s a little involved for me. For those of us that want an easy solution and seem to use our phones a normal amount (and probably have landlines at home and the office), there is a pretty easy solution:

Turn off Wi-Fi!

Wi-Fi Off

Seems silly, right?  It is, but it works.  If you aren’t in danger of going over your 3G data plan, turning off wi-fi appears to be a huge boon.  Empirical evidence?  Hell no, just observation.

During the first 3 days of getting my new phone, I was too lazy to look up the crazy password that my wi-fi encryption spits out, so I stuck with 3G.  The same is true when I was at the office.  But after a few days, I decided it was time to dig up my password and let wi-fi take over.  The morning after a new charge, my phone was dead.  Yet, my usage pattern for talk and surf hadn’t changed.  The only wrinkle was the decision to set up of my home wi-fi account.

Since then, I have disabled wi-fi, and battery life has returned to an acceptable (maybe even good) level.  Give it a whirl, and let me know if it works for you.
